According to Wikipedia, “mutual aid is an organizational model where voluntary, collaborative exchanges of resources and services for common benefit take place amongst community members to overcome social, economic, and political barriers to meeting common needs.” To put that in plain English, mutual aid is similar to charity and builds sustainable economies that don’t require money to operate, instead focusing on people giving what they can to those in need of what they’re giving, and also people receiving what they need (or desire if there is extra after needs are fulfilled).
Mutual aid can be material needs, labor needs, or educational needs. Want to teach literacy skills in your community? Sign up to volunteer with us!
